Complete guide on pressure filters for your pond

A pressure filter is a filter for your pond where the water running through the filter remains under pressure. This has the advantage that you can use the output of a pressure filter for a waterfall or stream, for example. Did you know that most pressure filters have many other advantages? For example, an easy cleaning function and built-in UV-c device. This makes a pressure filter an ideal filter for your pond. In this article, read all about a pressure filter and whether it is suitable for your pond.

1. The advantages and disadvantages of a pressure filter at a glance

We list the advantages and disadvantages of a pressure filter for you. Read everything about how a pressure filter works and what you can do with it.

Advantages

  • The output of the pressure filter is under pressure and output water you can therefore still use to a waterfall, stream or UV-c device
  • Often easy to clean with cleaning function and dirty water drain
  • Pressure filter does not take up much space due to compact shape
  • Pressure filter can be buried so that it is invisible next to your pond
  • Pressure filter often comes with a built-in UV lamp, which helps to combat floating algae and other microorganisms

Disadvantages

  • A pressure filter is not suitable for very large ponds, but better suited for small to medium ponds
  • Due to compact shape, the UV-c lamp may not always have enough capacity for your pond, however, you can easily connect the output of your pressure filter to an additional UV-c device
  • You need a pond pump with the right capacity with pressure filter.

2. How does a pressure filter work?

Pressure filters filter and clean the water in your pond through various processes and filter media. Below we list the most important processes for you.

Vortex loosens dirt particles

Due to the unique round shape of a pressure filter and the water which is pumped into the chamber under pressure, the water enters in a "vortex" movement. It churns from the top to the bottom of the filter. This helps loosen dirt particles from the water which can be absorbed by the filter mats. Thus, larger dirt particles are filtered out of the water.

Biological filter ensures a good nitrogen cycle

A biological filter is essential for your pond. This filter is created by bacteria that convert harmful ammonia into nitrite, and harmful nitrite back into the better nitrate. This is also called the nitrogen cycle. This biological filter occurs naturally in your pond, but you often need an additional filter system such as a pressure filter to get sufficient filtration for the waste in your pond.

In a pressure filter, different types of filter mats and bio-balls provide the ideal breeding ground for the necessary bacteria to start your bio-filtration. These ensure a healthy and clear pond so you can enjoy your healthy fish swimming around!

UV lamp combats floating algae

Besides filtering out dirt particles and pollutants, there are also microorganisms such as algae that you would rather not have too much of in your pond. Algae can cause cloudy water and too much algae can even harm your fish and plants. The most important thing to prevent algae is a good balance in your pond with waste products, food and filtration of this. A UV-c device can help fight algae by controlling it with UV-c light. Algae will not have a chance to grow any further and your pond will become clearer. With a built-in UV-c device in your pressure filter, you ensure that you have all-in-one to filter and clean your pond.

Need more UV-c capacity? Then simply expand your pressure filter with an additional UV-c device. You easily place this after the output of your pressure filter.

3. Easy cleaning of your pressure filter

Filter mats and bio balls become fouled over time by dirt particles from your pond. It is then necessary to clean these filter materials. With a flow-through filter, the filter materials must be removed and rinsed under the tap or garden hose. With a pressure filter, however, you can easily clean the filter mats without opening the pressure filter and removing the filter mats.

BluPressure pressure filters from BluGarda have a convenient cleaning mode. When you use this cleaning mode, you can clean the filter mats in your pressure filter with a few twists and turns. Turning the handle activates a squeezing mechanism that forces dirt particles out of the filter mats. Because in the cleaning position the dirt particles do not go back into the pond, but for example towards your garden or the sewer, you are no longer bothered by these dirt particles in your pond. So you literally have your pressure filter cleaned in a few hand twists.

The additional outlet is also convenient when, for example, you want to refresh the water in your pond. You then leave the output on for an extended period of time until enough water is pumped from your pond to replenish with fresh water.

4. Pump with a pressure filter

A pressure filter often does not come with a pump. You need an additional pond pump to ensure proper flow and pressure of pond water to your pressure filter. Make sure the pond pump has the correct capacity. If the capacity is too low, a pressure filter will not work properly, and if it is too high, your pressure filter may break down or leak.
